Tiger Woods outright US Open favourite after Memorial win
Published:Tiger Woods has been cut to 6/1 to win this month’s US Open after his stunning win at the Memorial on Sunday.
Woods produced a brilliant final-round 67 to claim his second title of the year and the 73rd of his career.
The 36-year-old is now level with Jack Nicklaus in the number of tour wins but is still chasing the record he really wants – Nicklaus’s 18 major titles.
Woods has been jettisoned on 14 majors since his one-legged victory in the 2008 US Open and expectations will be high heading into the second major of the year at the Olympic Club in a fortnight’s time.
The way he putted will be hugely encouraging for Woods and his much-maligned coach Sean Foley and he finally looks to be back to his best with the flat stick – something that has been holding him back from truly regaining his pre-scandal form.
However, just a week after his last tour victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational he slumped to a disappointing 40th place finish at the Masters and 6/1 may appear rather short to some punters.
Woods is trailed in the betting by Rory McIlroy who has drifted to 12/1 after a disappointing couple of weeks that culminated in him missing the cut at Wentworth last week.
The defending champion shouldn’t be ruled out though and may be worth consideration.
Finally, the last three US Opens have been won by first-time major winners and with Justin Rose racking up another top ten finish in California, he looks tempting at a pretty decent 33/1.
