St Nicholas Abbey to be Beaten Up in other Epsom TV races

Although the Derby will take all of the headlines, there is another Group One on the same card, with Aidan O’Brien looking for a big-race double in the Coronation Cup with St Nicholas Abbey.

Like Camelot in the Epsom Derby odds, St Nicholas Abbey is primed to be sent off an odds-on favourite, while there are three other races from the meeting also on offer to television viewers.

Epsom 13:35 – Spoke To Carlo @ 10/1

Still a maiden after three starts, Spoke To Carlo has run into some talented opposition in these races and appeared to appreciate 1m2f last time, while he has a nice draw.

Andrew Balding enjoyed a good day at Epsom yesterday and although Bonfire is his big hope for the day in the Derby, Open Water has more than a strong chance if allowed to dictate from the front.

Epsom 14:05 – Heavy Metal @ 3/1

Trainer Mark Johnston has a fine record in the race and Heavy Metal could have done no more last time when conceding weight all round and winning at Newmarket.

Epsom 14:40 – Beaten Up @ 4/1

Winning both big races on the Epsom card with odds-on favourites may be one step too far for O’Brien, although he has won the Coronation Cup in five of the last seven years.

Defending champion St Nicholas Abbey has obvious claims, but he was not entirely convincing last year and can be taken on.

Masked Marvel may be the only other Group One winner in the field, but Beaten Up can be forgiven for pulling too hard on his seasonal reappearance and can continue the improvement shown when going unbeaten last season as a three-year-old.

Epsom 15:15 – Jamesway @ 8/1

Jamesway has become slightly expensive to follow in the past year, going off favourite in a run of losing efforts, but can recompense some of his losses here.

He was seventh in this race last year when only a three-year-old and would have possibly won last time at Epsom had he enjoyed better luck in running when getting boxed in on unsuited ground.

Sohraab could be the danger as he took fourth last year from an awful draw and can improve from a better stall.
