Murray still an outside bet for French glory after Gasquet win
Published:Andy Murray can still be backed at 28/1 to win the French Open after staging a brilliant comeback against Richard Gasquet.
The Scot lost the first set 6-1 but came back to win the next three sets 6-4 6-1 6-2 to reach the last eight for the third time in his career.
He now faces in-form David Ferrer in his quarter final and the Spaniard will be a much tougher test for Murray who has struggled with back spasms throughout the tournament.
Ferrer too has made three quarter finals at the French but looks in imperious form at the moment and has yet to drop a set in the tournament.
Murray has a better head-to-head record tough, winning five of their nine encounters, but on clay things are very different.
Ferrer has won all three of their meetings on the surface and, with Murray far from his best for long periods of this tournament and struggling with injury, it’s hard to see beyond another win for the 30-year-old.
Even if Murray does overcome the odds to see off Ferrer it’s more than likely that he will face another Spaniard in the semis – the King of Clay, Rafa Nadal.
The odds of 28/1 may seem long for a player of Murray’s class at this stage of the tournament but, with such a tough route to even get to the final, his wait for a maiden Grand Slam title looks like going on for a bit longer yet.
