Laudrup attracts punters’ support to succeed Rodgers at Swansea

Whilst Ian Holloway maintains favouritism for the Swansea job at 11/4, Michael Laudrup’s popularity with punters over the weekend has seen him cut to 7/2 to take the post.

Now joint-second favourite with Wigan coach Graeme Jones, Laudrup is thought to be an attractive option for Swans chairman Huw Jenkins, though he is yet to speak to the Dane regarding the managerial vacancy.

Laudrup has been out of work since resigning from Mallorca last season, in the aftermath of keeping the club in La Liga during a season where many doubted their credentials.

His role at that club succeeded a tenure at Getafe, during which he oversaw runs to the Spanish Cup final and UEFA Cup quarter-final, in addition to league stability throughout his reign.

Another point on an unblemished if unspectacular CV comes at the helm of Brondby meanwhile, where he steered the club to league glory in his native Denmark, during what was his maiden job in management.

Now 47, Laudrup fits the bill of Jenkins’ ideal candidate to continue the terrific work Brendan Rodgers has started at the Liberty Stadium.

A young manager with a penchant for free-flowing, attractive football, Laudrup’s pedigree as a player is the most noticeable variable between he and his would-be predecessor Rodgers.

Widely renowned as one of the world’s finest players in his pomp, the Danish midfielder appeared for the likes of Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid, where a penchant for aesthetically pleasing football was nurtured.

His sides have drawn plaudits for their eye-catching, attacking style in the past, most regularly during his stint as Getafe boss, and such appraisals will serve as glowing endorsements to Swansea’s chairman.

With a global reputation and an impressive track record to date, Laudrup would seem a popular choice amongst the majority of Swansea fans, and he could be offered a return from managerial wilderness sooner rather than later.
