Harmon suggests Woods is rightful favourite for US Open

Two victories in his last five tournament starts has resulted in former coach Butch Harmon suggesting that the bookies have got it right in Tiger Woods being favourite to win the US Open.

Woods can be backed at 7/1 to win the US Open and this could still represent a big price given that it was no surprise to see him quoted as short as 3/1 to win a major when at his blistering best back in the early 2000s.

The former world number one triumphed first in the Arnold Palmer Invitational back in March and followed up on his latest start, when three birdies in the closing four holes ensured a success in the Memorial.

Woods has opted to take a week off since to allow some time to relax before the US Open and Harmon believes that he is the man to beat.

Harmon said: “I think that was the best golf we have seen from Tiger in four to five years. He seemed to have complete control of his golf ball, and it has been quite a while since we have seen him produce such a display of pure ball-striking like that.

“He also putted much better than he has of late.”

What is also worth mentioning about the Memorial victory is that Woods led the field in terms of finding greens in regulation and this will be key at The Olympic Club because of the smallness of the greens on course.

The one club that has been particularly known to cause Woods frustrations is his driver and wayward tee shots can result in multiple dropped shots.

However, with numerous doglegs and position taking precedence over distance, there is every reason to believe that Woods may only need to use the driver once or twice in each round, minimising his chances of finding trouble.

Alternatively, Woods is 11/8 to finish in the top five of the US Open and 5/2 to be the leading American.
