Djokovic and Federer among favourites to complete job quickly
Published:As the likes of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer head into the third day of Wimbledon as 1/100 favourites for their matches, it is worth looking at other markets to capitalise on the stars’ outings at the competition.
Both should easily negotiate a passage to the next round at the All England Club, with relative minnows Ryan Harrison and Fabio Fognini their respective opponents.
Defending champion Djokovic and Federer are, as ever, at the forefront of the betting for the tournament as a whole, and emphatic displays are expected of the pair in the early stages.
With that in mind, both look good to partake in first sets featuring under 9.5 games on Wednesday.
Each player can be backed to complete whitewash successes at 1/6, yet far more value can be found in the opening set going less than 9.5 games, which is an 8/13 shot.
Such a margin would allow the players to drop three games during the set, and it is difficult to envisage them losing in excess of this amount.
The maximum amount of games each played in their tournament openers this year was nine during a set, and they can further build on this on Wednesday.
Elsewhere, in the women’s betting, tournament favourite Maria Sharapova isn’t quite as popular to win her match, yet is well odds-on at 1/25 to do so.
She triumphed over Australian Anastasia Rodionova in straight sets on Centre Court on Monday, and the number one seed should do the same over Tsvetana Pironkova at 1/6 on Wednesday.
Heather Watson will also return to the court in midweek, following arguably the most impressive showing of her career in dispatching Czech Iveta Benesova 6-1, 6-2 on Monday.
The 20-year-old Brit is 2/5 to beat Jamie Hampton, but after her stunning opening display, could well be worth a punt to complete another straight sets triumph at 11/10.
