Choi to upstage Woods in final round to win AT&T National

Published:

Tiger Woods may be the marquee name in the field for the AT&T National, but KJ Choi can continue his recent improvement in form to claim his first PGA Tour victory of the season at 40/1.

All of the top European names are absent from the field, while many of the top Americans have also opted for a week off, including Bubba Watson, Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar and US Open champion Webb Simpson.

Woods does take part and is the 5/1 favourite in the golf odds to triumph and in a way returns as the defending champion.

This year is the first since Woods’ success in 2009 that the tournament is taking place at the Congressional Club and his recent form has been fairly strong.

He still managed to finish in a share of 21st despite some troubles at the US Open and punters will do well to remember that Woods does lie second in the PGA Tour statistics this season in terms of finding greens in regulation.

This may prove significant as the greens at Congressional are liable to be a lot harder than when Rory McIlroy ran away with the US Open at the course last year.

On that occasion the greens were fairly new and became very damp because of the rain in Maryland, but having had another year to settle, they are expected to play tougher.

Choi will be suited to this as he arguably comes into his own on tougher courses, where making fewer mistakes are perhaps more important than shooting low scores.

After an average season of top-50 finishes, Choi has improved of late and claimed successive top 20s, while significantly, he has shot his lowest round of the tournament in the final round of four of the last five events he has completed.

This could be especially valuable if in contention heading into the final day here.

Jason Day is another betting option to consider at 25/1 as although he has endured a topsy-turvy season, he did finish second to McIlroy in last year’s US Open.
