Cahill injury paves way for Lescott to start Euro 2012 opener

After Gary Cahill became the latest casualty of Roy Hodgson’s squad, Joleon Lescott is now just 1/10 to start England’s opening Euro 2012 game with France.

Cahill appeared a sure-fire starter before sustaining a broken jaw in Saturday’s friendly with Belgium, but his replacement in that game Lescott now looks almost certain to feature from the off in Poland and Ukraine.

His partner looks nailed on in the centre of defence, with John Terry a 1/100 shot to start against France, as he did in Saturday’s final preparation game prior to the tournament.

Amongst others Ladbrokes see as certainties to start, Joe Hart, Ashley Cole and captain Steven Gerrard are all attributed 1/100 prices to be named in the starting lineup.

Ashley Young is 1/50 to start, whilst Glen Johnson seems certain to take the right-back berth at 1/33.

Scott Parker at 1/25, James Milner at 1/4, and Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck as 4/7 hopes complete the squad members that are odds-on to kick off England’s competition against France meanwhile.

Andy Carroll comes next in the betting, at 5/4 to take part against the country he made his international bow against, whilst Stewart Downing is a 2/1 shot, and Phil Jones is 5/2 to be selected in the first 11.
