Big threat to Djokovic and Federer may miss Wimbledon

If anyone from outside the top four in the world is to win Wimbledon this year then Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is arguably the most likely.

Tsonga became the first person ever to come back from two sets down to beat Roger Federer in a Grand Slam at Wimbledon last year, before going out in the semi finals to Novak Djokovic in an exciting clash.

The Frenchman showed signs that he could be a big danger at Wimbledon again this year with his display at the French Open, losing to Djokovic again in the quarter finals, despite holding four match points in the fourth set.

However, there are now doubts that he will be able to take part at Wimbledon after suffering a suspected broken finger in a warm-up event at Queens.

Tsonga will need a scan on the little finger of his right hand to know the full extent of the damage, which was caused when he slipped and landed awkwardly in the final set of his match with Ivan Dodig.

Even if Tsonga is declared fit to feature at Wimbledon, the fact that he will have suffered an interrupted preparation is also not ideal.

He said: “I think it’s serious. I felt like I broke something or I strained it when I fell.

“It’s only a finger but it’s tough because I have to play with my hand.”

Tsonga remains 16/1 in the Wimbledon odds and certainly has the game to be a danger if recovering.

His serve is arguably his most deadly weapon and this is arguably more of an asset on grass than any other surface, alongside the serve-and-volley style that is a dying breed in tennis.
