5:35 Royal Ascot: Emilio Largo to continue turf improvement

Published:

Emilio Largo remains unbeaten on all of his attempts over 7f to date and he can continue to excel at the distance with a success at 11/1 in the Buckingham Palace Stakes.

Although the soft ground has caused six of the runners to be withdrawn, including the well-fancied Lightning Cloud, 24 still line up and the majority have to be given some sort of chance.

However, two of the most common trends to take from previous renewals are that half of the last ten winners have been aged either four or five and half have also had an official rating of no higher than 92.

Following both of these trends reduces the field to three runners this year, with Emilio Largo clearly looking the best of the trio.

He can be forgiven his run early last month as he struggled to get to grips with the all weather and bounced back to winning form on the turf of Ripon.

Emilio Largo is up just 2lb for this win and it came over 1m, suggesting he has the stamina for the Buckingham Palace Stakes.

But, 7f looks his optimum distance after two wins over the trip.

Unsurprisingly, there are a few other runners representing suitable each-way value, one of which is Gossamer Seed at 20/1.

Back in May, over this distance of 7f, Gossamer Seed beat Ishvana, who has since finished second in the Irish 1,000 Guineas and then triumphed at Royal Ascot earlier in the week.

He has been tried over shorter, inadequate trips since on his last two starts so is entitled to produce his best again, while he should also appreciate the ground.

The problem for Gossamer Seed is that he is drawn in stall 30 and with the lower numbers potentially having a better position, Noble Citizen is not without a hope at 25/1.

All Odds and Markets are correct as of the date of publishing.
