2:30 Royal Ascot: Sandreamer to maintain Channon record

Published:

The Albany Stakes has thrown up a few big-priced winners in recent seasons and Sandreamer can become another at 16/1 to enhance trainer Mick Channon’s already smart record in the race.

Newfangled is a heavy favourite at 15/8 in the Royal Ascot odds and oozed class when travelling strongly up front and then bounding away from decent opposition on her only start at Newmarket.

This was also achieved on similar ground to that at Ascot and so has to have leading claims to build on this success.

However, her price is plenty short enough, given that there are seven other horses in the field that have been successful on their only start to date and it is hard not to believe there is better value elsewhere.

Light Up My Life is one such entrant from the Richard Hannon yard, but there is the case that she would be best over further than 6f.

Agent Allison is well fancied, but it is difficult to quantify her win as she beat seemingly moderate opposition, albeit impressively, while something similar can be said for Amazonas.

One that may warrant respect is Sendmylovetorose, who ran on well after being shaken up on similar ground to Ascot at Navan.

But preference is for Sandreamer, who is looking to give Channon a fourth victory in ten years.

He also fits the trend that six of the last ten winners had only made one career start prior to Ascot and the same number were successful on their most recent start.

The second and fourth from his maiden success have also franked the form by winning since, while the steady uphill finish should pose little problem as she encountered similar at Newmarket.

The Gold Cheongsam is one of the more intriguing entrants after a promising third on debut, although the winner Mister Marc did little to advertise this form when well beaten at Ascot earlier this week.

All Odds and Markets are correct as of the date of publishing.
