Villas-Boas backed for Liverpool, but Capello has to be best option
Published:The overnight money has come for Andre Villas-Boas to be the next Liverpool boss, but surely any future manager does not possess the daunting CV that can be provided by Fabio Capello.
Villas-Boas was largely available at 8/1 for the first few hours after the sacking of Kenny Dalglish, yet is now just 7/4 after a hefty gamble.
It is believed that the Fenway Group were keen on naming Villas-Boas as Liverpool manager when Roy Hodgson was sacked, but were priced out of the market by Porto’s extravagant compensation package.
However, he is now available for free after managing just over half a season at Chelsea before being fired by Roman Abramovich.
This failed tenure at Stamford Bridge may put off many Liverpool fans, despite the manager guiding Porto to the treble previously and numerous bosses can count at least one failure on their records.
Even Capello has underachieved once, on a second stint at AC Milan, where his return followed a largely similar pattern to that of Dalglish.
In his one season they finished tenth in the league, 30 points off top spot and lost a cup final.
But Capello has won the domestic league title with every club team that he has ever managed and despite failing to guide England to a major tournament victory, his win percentage rate was better than any previous manager in the international hotseat.
The potential drawbacks are that Capello is now 65 and Liverpool may prefer someone with more longevity, while rumours from Italy suggest that he has been in talks with Chelsea, which may be a job that has greater appeal.
It would be hard to believe that Capello would not feature on a Liverpool shortlist if the Fenway Group are looking for a manager with a proven track record over potential and so 9/1 could represent decent value that he is named as Dalglish’s successor.
