Mourinho deal means Di Matteo will see further Chelsea support
Published:Despite wide speculation that he would leave the club this summer, Jose Mourinho has today penned a four year extension to his contract at Real Madrid.
It is thought that Mourinho, who led the club to the Spanish title last season, wanted to return to England this summer, with former club Chelsea potential suitors.
The Portuguese coach was also linked with the vacant managerial position at Liverpool, though it was thought that a return to Stamford Bridge was more plausible.
Now though, in the aftermath of Mourinho’s renewed Bernabeu deal, further support will come for favourite Roberto Di Matteo to land the Chelsea job on a permanent basis.
Di Matteo has shown undoubted credentials in a managerial role, leading the Blues to FA Cup and Champions League glory in less than half a season in charge as interim boss.
A greater unity within the Chelsea squad has been evident under Di Matteo’s regime, and the Italian is now thought to be under serious consideration from owner Roman Abramovich.
He would fit the bill of Abramovich’s recent appointments, who have often been young, aspiring foreign coaches, and the trophies he has attained this season means he now has the pedigree to match predecessors like Mourinho and Andre Villas-Boas.
It has been confirmed that Di Matteo will meet with owner Abramovich this week, with the discussion of his permanent appointment as manager the focal point of the engagement.
Meanwhile, Laurent Blanc would seem to have the most realistic chance of others in the betting, though the exciting young France coach would be unable to negotiate with the club until after Euro 2012.
This could bode well for Abramovich though, who may wish to hang fire and see how Blanc’s side perform in a major tournament before making any decision.
