Maybe no 1,000 Guineas banker, Discourse looks best each-way rival

Frankie Dettori may be riding Lyric Of Light in the 1,000 Guineas, but there is a strong possibility that he has picked the wrong horse and Discourse looks overpriced at 10/1 to triumph at Newmarket.

Dettori landed the spoils 12 months ago when guiding Blue Bunting to victory and he had the choice of the two runners from the same Mahmood al-Zarooni yard this time.

Both are among the five unbeaten fillies in the 18-runner field and based on what they have achieved so far there looks little to choose between the pair.

It is no surprise that Lyric Of Light is fancied after her success in the Fillies’ Mile and the booking of Dettori has seen her price shorten to 9/1.

However, no horse has completed this double since 1996 despite many Fillies’ Mile winners being fancied to and Lyric Of Light may fail in the same way.

Discourse has only been tried over a maximum of 7f to date, but ran as if the extra furlong would be no problem when winning in taking fashion at Newmarket last time.

The fact that Dettori has opposed her should prove little hindrance, as last year’s Derby winner Mickael Barzalona has picked up a useful spare ride.

Maybe is the 1/1 favourite, but this price is far too short given the high calibre of opposition, even after Camelot’s win in the 2,000 Guineas.

Aside from Discourse, Mashoora warrants respect at 8/1 given the strong record of French-trained runners, while Diala may prove the underestimated darkhorse at 14/1.

Diala chased home Lyric of Light on his first start, but got second run on the day and would have maybe won if not boxed in entering the closing stages.

She has seen won comfortably on her only start since and the fact that both of these runs have come at Newmarket is another positive.
