Martinez return sees Rodgers installed as Liverpool favourite

As the saga over Liverpool’s next manager continues, Brendan Rodgers has been slashed to 1/2 favourite for the post, amidst Roberto Martinez’ return from talks with the club’s American owners.

The Fenway Sports Group have stuck to their guns in terms of their will to speak to several potential candidates, but after initially rejecting their advances, Rodgers may now be willing to converse regarding the vacant managerial position.

It is thought that the current Swansea manager’s initial stance stemmed from a belief he had only a far-fetched chance of landing the post.

Now however, with a field of as many as 12 potential appointments being whittled down to three, Rodgers looks to have a tremendous chance of being offered the Anfield reins.

Chief Liverpool owner John W Henry held extensive talks with Wigan chief Roberto Martinez in America last week, but the Spaniard’s return to British soil has inferred punters to lose faith in his chances of succeeding Kenny Dalglish.

Indeed, the Latics coach has drifted out to 9/4 from being odds-on at 4/5 only yesterday.

Rodgers meanwhile, is currently in America, after travelling to watch Wales take on Mexico over the weekend, and he is expected to meet with Henry for discussions this week.

However, Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins is insistent that a second approach is yet to arrive from Liverpool with regards to speaking to Rodgers, which could prove a stumbling block if the former Reading boss is in fact Liverpool’s first choice for the post.

Henry, head of Fenway Sports Group, is aware of Liverpool supporters’ will for decisive action to occur sooner rather than later, and is now eager to tie up a deal which will allow his choice to begin preparations for next season.

He, along with chairman Tom Werner, are expected back in the UK next week to confirm their decision, whatever it may be.
