Khan’s manager still optimistic over title rematch with Peterson
Published:Amir Khan is 1/4 in the boxing odds to win his rematch with Lamont Peterson and the business manager of the Bolton fighter remains convinced that the light-welterweight title bout will still go ahead as planned.
Peterson’s defence of the WBA and IBF belts that he won from Khan five months ago was thrown into serious doubt after he was found to have tested positive for synthetic testosterone, which is a banned substance.
However, it is unlikely that Peterson would have deliberately breached the rules given that the Olympic-style blood tests were of his request.
His team have submitted medical findings relating to the positive test and it is now in the hands of the Nevada Athletics Commission as to whether Peterson will be allowed to fight.
Meanwhile, Peterson’s chances of getting the fight to go ahead are boosted by the fact he tested negative in a urine test in April.
Khan’s business manager Asif Vali told Sky Sports News: “The Peterson team seem to think that something’s gone wrong during the very first Vada (Voluntary Anti-Doping Association) drug test which Lamont took in March.
“Their explanation is that it’s something he took earlier on in the year – before the last fight. The fight’s on. The Nevada commission will come back to us with their findings.”
With the fight due to take place in Las Vegas on May 19th, a decision will need to be reached soon and Khan will certainly want the chance to make amends after losing his belts in a battle marred by controversial scoring.
Peterson is 3/1 to beat Khan for a second time and 6/1 to repeat his success via the scorecards of the ringside judges.
