FA Cup Final: back Chelsea pensioners to open scoring

Published:

Ladbrokes are offering odds of 5/2 that the opening goal in this Saturday’s FA Cup final between Chelsea and Liverpool is scored by a Blues player over 30-years-old – and it’s a bet well worth serious consideration.

Roberto Di Matteo’s men are the 13/10 favourites to win their seventh FA Cup and their third in the past four years.

Their last victory – against Portsmouth in 2009 – was settled by a single strike from Didier Drogba, one of the Chelsea players who is now over 30-years-old.

Drogba on his own is 7/1 to open the scoring which looks like pretty decent value considering he’s scored more goals than anyone else at the new Wembley – seven in seven appearances, including three in FA Cup finals.

The other Chelsea players on the wrong side of 30 include Frank Lampard, a player’s who’s bagged himself 17 goals already this season, including a strike in the Blues’ comprehensive 5-1 semi final victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

The 33-year-old is 9/1 to hit the first goal at Wembley this Saturday.

Elsewhere, the other Chelsea players over 30 include Ashley Cole, Florent Malouda and John Terry with the latter certainly a contender to find the net.

Terry headed home for the Blues in their 6-1 demolition of QPR last week last week and could even be worth backing in the first goalscorer stakes at 25/1 – especially as he will be determined to make an impression following his sending off against Barcelona that means he’ll miss the Champions League final.

Malouda shouldn’t be discounted either meaning the odds of 5/2 for a Chelsea player over the age of 30 to open the scoring looks well worth closer investigation.
