Wolves dealt further blow as Hennessey faces six months out
Published:Wolves’ horror show of a season continues with the loss of goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey for six months thanks to a cruciate knee ligament tear, as Terry Connor’s 1/750 relegation certainties attempt to defy the odds and stay up.
The former Stockport loanee had been complaining of pain in his knee early on in the draw at the Stadium of Light last week but opted to play on, and it could have been that decision to remain on the pitch that resulted in such serious damage.
The Welsh number one has been impressive this season, putting in a string of wonderful performances behind a leaky Wolves rear guard, and is sure to be one of a number of players that attracts attention from Premier League clubs when their relegation is eventually confirmed.
Dorus de Vries will come into the starting line-up for the remainder of the season. The ex-Swansea stopper has played only five cup games this season and has yet to take part in a top-flight fixture.
Carl Ikeme has also been recalled from his loan spell at Championship side Doncaster Rovers to deputise for De Vries.
The injury comes before another crucial game for the bottom club as they face second-place Manchester City at Molineux in a game that could confirm their relegation to the Championship.
The last time these two met in the Midlands it resulted in a 5-2 Carling Cup Success for a young City side and it is almost impossible to see anything other than a win for Roberto Mancini’s side at 2/9.
