Westwood can secure elusive maiden Major in 2012
Published:Lee Westwood’s two shot victory in the Indonesian Masters leaves him at 14/1 to claim his first Major at this year’s upcoming US Open.
The British golfer battled hard in sodden conditions at the Jakarta course and despite having to play 32 holes on the final day, after Saturday’s play was suspended, he came out on top.
Westwood held an eight shot lead going into the final round but the conditions and fatigue showed as the chasing pack got to within two, but the Worksop born man dug in to hold on and retain his crown.
The win did little in terms of his current world ranking of third, but it will have worked wonders for his confidence as he looks to the remaining Majors this year in a bid to finally claim one for himself, and certify his place amongst the golfing elite.
The 38-year old, who is also a 16/1 shot to taste victory in the USPGA Championship, has been in contention at Majors before but has never quite got over the line.
The big-hitter has seven top three finishes in his career, including two second places in 2010 at both the Masters and the Open and he finished tied third in the only major of the year so far at Augusta, having led at numerous stages throughout.
He has seemed destined to win a Major without ever quite getting there and the Open at Royal Lytham may be his best chance yet.
The home crowd will be backing Westwood, who is 14/1 to win in Lancashire, and if he can control the putter that has so agonisingly let him down in big tournaments then he will be a contender to emulate Darren Clarke, who took the Claret Jug last year.
Fellow Major-less Brit Luke Donald is at 14/1 to claim his maiden victory at the USPGA or the Open whilst he is a 20/1 chance for the US Open in June.
