Roma and Juventus lead chase for controversial Liverpool star
Published:Dismal league form may lead to Kenny Dalglish considering an overhaul of his squad in the summer, and whilst Luis Suarez is a player he’d prefer to hold on to, the striker could in fact be one of the first to leave, with Roma and Juventus interested.
Although he has drawn some criticism for not scoring as many goals as perhaps he should, few could argue that Suarez’s impressive displays for Liverpool would make the majority of fans sad to see him go.
However, with controversy surrounding the Patrice Evra incident still rife, and Suarez being unable to contribute in any real significant manner during the Reds’ run of six defeats in their last seven, the Anfield club could be willing to listen to offers.
They would be hopeful of recouping much of the £22.8million that they paid Ajax for his services back in January 2011, and with each of the Italian teams hopeful of making a marquee summer signing, they would be likely to stump up such a fee.
Roma could have the upper hand in their bid for Suarez however, with club president Thomas DiBenedetto maintaining close links with the Liverpool hierarchy.
DiBenedetto is a minority shareholder in the Fenway Sports Group which owns the Reds, and was believed to be integral in the organisation of a friendly between the two clubs which will occur in July.
Whilst promising manager Luis Enrique could not offer Champions League football at the Stadio Olimpico, Liverpool are set to compete only in the Europa League too, and Suarez could be convinced to switch to a country with favourable tax conditions.
A transfer has long been mooted since the controversy surrounding the Evra case, and Suarez could now be set for a more permanent exile from the Liverpool squad come the summer.
