Liverpool’s Charlie Adam ruled out for rest of the season

Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam is set to miss out on the FA Cup final after being told his season is over.

The Scots’ club are 11/10 to lift the trophy for the first time since they were victorious in 2006, when they meet Chelsea at Wembley, but they will have to do so without the former Blackpool man.

Liverpool’s opponents are priced at 4/6 to win England’s premier cup competition for the third time in four years.

Adam sustained the knee ligament strain against QPR and it was thought he may recover in time for the final, but further tests have shown that he will be out for a significant amount of time.

He spent the semi-final tie against Everton on crutches and was hoping to be back light running this week but this news has put a dampener on those plans.

Fortunately the injury does not require surgery and it is simply a case of rest and recuperation if he is to be ready for pre-season.

He also looks set to miss out on a place in Stuart Pearce’s Team GB Olympics squad, as his manager explained.

“There is no operation needed but he won’t play this season,” said Dalglish.

“And I would think if they had any designs on having him in the Olympics he wouldn’t be fit for that either.”

Adam has been in and out of the starting line-up since joining for £6.75 million from the relegated Seasiders in the summer, making 35 appearances in all.

His injury brings to an end a fairly underwhelming campaign for the 26-year old who was expected to have a big impact in his first term after being the stand-out performer for his previous club.

The Scot started well, netting in his fourth appearance but his form fell away and he lost his place in the side to local lad Jay Spearing, confounding his loss of form by missing his penalty in the Carling Cup success over Cardiff.
