Ice cool Sigurdsson could succeed Scholes at Man United
Published:Gylfi Sigurdsson has been a revelation since joining Swansea on loan in January, and the Icelandic midfielder is now believed to be peaking the interest of Manchester United, amongst others.
A seven goal haul from midfield, teamed with a Player of the Month accolade, have demonstrated the Premier League credentials of the former Reading man, who can also count Everton, Liverpool and Newcastle amongst potential suitors for his services.
His one in two average for the Swans has caught the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson most recently though, and the United boss seems willing to pay parent club Hoffenheim the £10million they desire for the 22-year-old.
Hoffenheim supporters however, remain perplexed at their club’s allowance to leave the club even on a semi-permanent basis, leading to the German outfit demanding that respectable fee for their starlet.
21 goals in his first full Championship season for Reading was an early demonstration of Sigurdsson’s sparkling eye for goal, but having now proven he can be as lethal at the top level, comparisons to Paul Scholes may not be as ludicrous as they perhaps first seemed.
Ferguson is still intent on landing a long-term successor to his 37-year-old maestro, and may see Sigurdsson as a potential solution, with Scholes’ current first-team involvement sure to aid the development of the all-action Swansea loan star.
Brendan Rodgers would hope his relationship with Sigurdsson could give him the advantage in landing the player on a permanent basis, having managed the midfielder on two separate occasions.
However, the former Reading manager will know that an opportunity to move to Old Trafford may be too good to turn down, and wouldn’t stand in his way.
The financial might of United would set them apart from competitors for Sigurdsson’s signature also, and it seems if Ferguson is serious about signing the Icelander this summer, he is in the driving seat to do so.
