Home platform gives Bayern a Real chance of progression

A 2-1 victory over Real Madrid will give Bayern Munich immense confidence heading to the Bernabeu next week, and the German outfit have been cut to 7/2 to win the Champions League in light of this.

Mario Gomez’ 90th minute winner at the Allianz Arena could prove vital in the grand scheme of things, as Mesut Ozil scored an away goal for the visitors that we are yet to learn the significance of too.

Real remain slightly shorter as 3/1 chances for tournament success, but on the back of their first defeat in this year’s competition, they could be rattled in next week’s fixture in Spain.

Also taking into account that Bayern have triumphed 11 times in their past 19 meetings with their Spanish counterparts, including last night’s win, they look to have as good a chance as any side would at halting Mourinho’s quest to claim a record 10th European title for Real.

It is also worth noting that the last time these teams met in a two-legged Champions League fixture, back in the 2006/2007 competition, Bayern went on to progress on away goals after a 3-2 defeat at the Bernabeu was teamed with a 2-1 home win for the Bavarians.

After being bested by the same scoreline at Old Trafford against Manchester United, yet still advancing en route to their last European final in 2010, Jupp Heynckes’ men will fancy their chances of racking up enough away goals to progress here.

Heynckes will be spurred on to conquer the side he ironically won the Champions League with back in 1998 as well, and as Bayern Munich have the added incentive of reaching a final played at their home ground the Allianz Arena, they would rarely have greater motivation to justify their 7/2 price for tournament success.
