Chelsea look to Newcastle’s Krul in summer with door to close on Cech
Published:Chelsea are set to ditch long standing number one Petr Cech next season, as they look to Newcastle’s man between the sticks, Tim Krul.
Krul has been in outstanding form this season and has been one of the many success stories of the Magpies impressive campaign, putting himself high on the list of the Premier League’s biggest goalkeeping talents.
Concerns have grown about the Czech number one’s performances this season and it is believed the hierarchy in West London see Krul as the ideal replacement to offer a calming influence behind a new look back four next year.
The 24-year old has forced his way into contention for a starting birth in the Dutch national side, as he exerts increasing pressure on current number one, Maarten Stekelenberg.
The in-form stopper would command a fee somewhere around the £15million mark with wages of up to £90,000 a week, after he recently signed a new deal in the North East.
Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich, is thought to have sanctioned the move despite the fact he has no permanent man in charge, and with Newcastle’s policy of selling players for good prices under Mike Ashley, the Geordies are not expected to stand in Krul’s way should he wish to leave.
However, with both sides currently challenging for a Champions League spot, and Newcastle currently leading the London club, Krul may opt to stay up north should the Toon qualify and the Pensioners not.
Spurs were also interested in Krul, but with Chelsea’s involvement they have been priced out of any deal for the keeper and are likely to turn to one-time Manchester United target, French international Hugo Lloris, to provide competition to the evergreen Brad Friedel.
