Aston Villa in grave danger as Wigan continue to excel

With six points garnered from games against Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal over the past fortnight, many will be reluctant to get behind them at 6/1 to be relegated, despite that being the longest price they have been for some time.

Wigan’s display at the Emirates was immensely brave, and they were well worth the victory they eventually achieved, showing a composure in possession that belied their lowly league position.

Such was the nature of their battling performance, it is hard to imagine the Latics accepting what once seemed an inevitable fate of relegation, especially after establishing a platform that they can now push on from.

They will hold no fears when travelling to Fulham on Saturday, and games against fellow strugglers Blackburn and Wolves are very much winnable, whilst Roberto Martinez’ men will fancy their chances when Newcastle visit the DW Stadium.

A side in contrast to the much-improved Latics however, is Alex McLeish’s Aston Villa.

Villa are without a win in their last five games, and their one victory was their only success in their past ten matches, making them look like an interesting proposition at 10/1 to go down.

McLeish’s men are now just one point clear of Wigan in 15th place, and six points adrift of the bottom three, with 18th placed Bolton still to visit Villa Park.

The Villains also face tricky trips to local rivals West Brom and impressive promoted outfit Norwich, whilst Sunderland and Tottenham will be no pushovers in Birmingham.

So desperately out of form, and struggling for goals, Villa don’t appear to have the same battle-hardened attitude that Wigan have demonstrated in recent weeks, and look far more susceptible to eventually descending into the bottom three.

This should be taken into account when considering Ladbrokes’ relegation betting odds, and Aston Villa appear overpriced as 10/1 chances to fall through the trap door.
