Swansea City look to tie down Sigurdsson and Sinclair

Swansea City’s comprehensive 3-0 win against Fulham at the weekend has seen their relegation odds pushed out to a massive 200/1 – but they now face another battle to keep their star players.

Scott Sinclair and Gylfi Sigurdsson have both impressed this season and the Swans are now determined to make sure the pair are playing Premier League football in south Wales next season.

Sinclair – who scored a hat-trick in their Championship play-off victory over Reading last season – has already attracted admiring glances from other Premier League sides and Swans boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to get the former Chelsea player to put pen to paper on a new long term deal.

The Northern Irishman said: “There have been initial discussions. He’s very happy here. It’s not been put on the back-burner.

“He knows he’s in a great place to develop so, hopefully, we can agree a new deal.”

A deal for Sigurdsson looks like being a more complicated matter though, with the midfielder just on loan at the Swans from Hoffenheim.

The German side paid Reading £7million for the player in 2010 and Swansea would surely have to smash their transfer record to tempt them to sell a player who has already bagged five goals since his loan move in January.

Rodgers added: “We have spoken to Sigurdsson’s agent and I’ve made the chairman aware of my feelings but, ultimately, it’s whether Hoffenheim want to sell him.

“We needed a goal-scoring midfielder and he has fitted in well with this group of players.”

There will undoubtedly be plenty of the bigger, more established Premier League clubs sniffing around Swansea’s impressive players this summer but, if Rodgers can convince them to stay, then the future will be incredibly bright for side currently eighth in the top tier of ‘English’ football.
