Playmaker looking most likely to break Spurs transfer record
Published:Spending big in the transfer market may be a necessity for Tottenham if they want to remain serious top-four challengers for the foreseeable future and Eden Hazard is one new face being particularly targeted in the summer.
Tottenham’s transfer record currently stands at the £17m they paid for David Bentley, which is far lower than the amounts paid consistently by Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea at points in the past ten years.
Meanwhile, in terms of the club’s top earners, they are again punching below their fellow challengers for the Premier League top four.
However, there are signs that things are about to change as Spurs chairman Daniel Levy considers upping the stakes in order to make a more serious fist at winning the Premier League title.
Top of the club’s shortlist is reportedly Lille playmaker Eden Hazard, who is on the radar of numerous Premier League clubs.
But rumours are circling that Tottenham are preparing a £30m swoop to sign Hazard and allow them to strike first in the race to secure his signature, even though Lille are thought to have put a £35m price tag on his head.
Furthermore, this is unlikely to represent the end of Spurs’ spending as two more new faces may arrive before the start of the next campaign.
Loic Remy’s name is constantly touted and it is likely to take in excess of £20m to encourage Marseille to sell.
Jan Vertonghen is the final name being chased and if the Ajax defender also arrives it could take total spending past £60m.
Finishing in the Champions League places this season could play a huge role in the threesome joining Tottenham and even though they have lost their last three Premier League games, this can still be backed at 1/4.
