Pique decision the big factor in Guardiola’s Barcelona future
Pep Guardiola has been linked with both the England and Chelsea managerial vacancies in recent weeks and his likelihood in taking either position could solely revolve around Gerard Pique.
Guardiola finds himself in a strong bartering position every summer at the Nou Camp, only ever accepting a one-year contract extension to stay on as Barcelona boss.
He has proved in the past that he will be no pushover and wasted little time shuffling Samuel Eto’o, Ronaldinho and Deco out of the door almost immediately after taking charge.
According to the Spanish media, Pique is the latest to upset the boss and fail to toe the club line to the desired level.
A few aspects of the Spanish defender’s behaviour have frustrated Guardiola, both on and off the pitch.
On it, Pique was sent off against Sporting Gijon and performed poorly in the draw with Osasuna, with the result being that he was left on the bench against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.
Meanwhile, off it Pique has seemingly not put the needs of the club first by partaking in various media activities.
And so even though Pique is one of the best defenders in the world and playing partners Carles Puyol and Eric Abidal are getting no younger, Guardiola reportedly wants to sell.
This gives the Barcelona board a predicament of whether to effectively be held hostage by their manager or look elsewhere but maintain one of their star players.
Barcelona are 1/1 in the Champions League odds to be the first team in the current guise of the tournament to successfully defend their crown.
But if there is tension within the squad, this may be a major hiccup towards their chances.
