Podolski signing would make Arsenal title contenders again

Arsenal may have slipped to 150/1 to win the Premier League this season – but those odds look like being a lot shorter next term if the latest rumours from Germany are to be believed.

According to German newspaper Bild, the Gunners have agreed personal terms with Cologne striker Lukas Podolski.

The German international – who has scored 43 goals in 91 appearances for his country – would be a huge signing for the north London side and would send a big message to the rest of the Premier League.

It’s been a difficult season for Arsenal as they struggled to cope with the departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri but they are currently in fourth spot following their 5-2 hammering of bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.

Robin van Persie was once again on the scoresheet for the Gunners and hanging on to him remains Arsene Wenger’s No.1 priority – Podolski needs to play alongside the Dutchman, not replace him.

If they can keep Van Persie and add an undoubted talent like Podolski to their ranks though, then there is every chance that Arsenal can improve on their performances this term and push hard for the Premier League title.

While the title looks way beyond them this season, Champions League football is a very real possibility and they are odds-on at 8/11 to finish in the top four and make it back into Europe’s elite.

However, a chance to return to the competition as defending champions is as good as gone following their 4-0 defeat against AC Milan in first leg of their second round game.

The Gunners are now 200/1 to win the Champions League.

If Wenger does open his cheque book this summer though, then backing Arsenal for glory next term could lead to a very decent pay out.
