Liverpool join the race for France international star

Having notched sixteen times in just 23 Ligue 1 appearances for Montpellier this season, French striker Olivier Giroud is attracting attention from some Premier League giants.

Although Arsenal’s interest in the 25-year-old appeared the most serious, Liverpool now look set to test Montpellier’s resolve with a £15million bid for a man who scored on his full international debut in a win over Germany last week.

Giroud’s form has been key to Montpellier’s title challenge this season, and though his value has rocketed over the past season, that doesn’t appear to have deterred Kenny Dalglish from identifying him as the ideal man to bolster his relatively blunt frontline.

Concerns that a top four spot will be missed out on at Liverpool are growing, with the side finding the net only 30 times in 26 Premier League games, and so a striker is undoubtedly a priority summer signing.

Their Anfield defeat to Arsenal at the weekend undoubtedly put the North London outfit in the driving seat to claim a Champions League spot ahead of them, but the Reds could react by snatching a player that Arsene Wenger is believed to admire greatly.

It has been previously insinuated that Giroud would welcome the chance to team up with a French contingent including Bacary Sagna and Abou Diaby at the Emirates, but with Liverpool’s interest now becoming apparent, the striker could have a difficult decision to make regarding his future.

With moves for attacking options widely mooted from Merseyside, it will be interesting to see what effect the potential signing of Giroud would have on the future of Andy Carroll, who is yet to fully find his feet at Anfield.

Luis Suarez too must improve in terms of his goal record, despite consistently impressive performances, and the form of these two between now and the end of the season, could prove essential in Liverpool’s bid for a top four finish, which the success of could determine where Giroud ends up next year.
