France boss could be in line for Chelsea job after Euro 2012
A very noticeable improvement has been evident at Chelsea since Roberto Di Matteo took the reins on an interim basis, but Laurent Blanc seems a tremendous bet to land the job full-time at a big 8/1.
Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho remains favourite to make a sensational Stamford Bridge return at 2/1, but with his side’s quest for La Liga glory not as certain as it appeared a few weeks ago, he could have unfinished business in Spain.
Also, the issues that he had with owner Roman Abramovich remain, and it is unlikely that two such gigantic egos could co-exist at the club.
Di Matteo is second in the betting meanwhile, and the 11/4 shot has done his chances little harm with his performance so far in his role as caretaker manager.
The Blues have put themselves firmly in the driving seat for a Champions League semi-final spot, as well as progressing to the FA Cup semi-final under Di Matteo’s stewardship, and further advancement in these competitions could convince Abramovich to hand him the job on a permanent basis.
What appears more likely though, is the appointment of 8/1 chance Laurent Blanc, who would seem to fit the bill in terms of the type of manager Abramovich has typically plumped for at Stamford Bridge.
The Russian owner has a penchant for the “flavour of the month,” as proved with his initial appointment of Jose Mourinho, the installation of World Cup winner Luiz Felip Scolari, and Europa League-winning coach Andre Villas-Boas most recently.
Abramovich is also yet to appoint a British coach, and with Frenchman Blanc making waves throughout Europe after overseeing a 18-match unbeaten run for the French national side, he could be the preferred choice to land the job.
Blanc’s contract with the French national side is set to expire after this summer’s European Championships, and Chelsea would reportedly be willing to pay £9million per year to secure his services.
