Confident Button a good bet to win the Australian Grand Prix

Jenson Button may head into this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix as the 11/2 third favourite, but he should have enough to push favourite Sebastian Vettel all the way.

Button has an excellent record around the Melbourne track and, despite no team giving anything away in testing, he is confident of increasing his number of wins in Australia from two to three.

Button said: “It’s been very difficult to read pace over the winter because a lot of teams have been playing their cards close to their chests. I think it’s going to be extremely close, and I can’t wait to find out where we sit in the pecking order.

“I think the two most significant memories for me in Australia are, in 2009, winning from pole for Brawn GP. It was a momentous race for the entire team and it felt so sweet to give them such a reward.

“And winning here in 2010. That was my first win for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes – it was completely unexpected, but a really significant result for me.”

A win this weekend would be equally significant for the Englishman as he and his teammate Lewis Hamilton look to peg back Sebastian Vettel in his Red Bull-Renault.

Reigning champion Vettel won in Melbourne last year and is the favourite again this time out at 6/4, meanwhile Hamilton – who finished second last time out – is the second favourite at 5/1.

However, it’s Button who currently looks the most tempting of bets.

With a sense of quiet optimism coming out of the McLaren camp and Button’s excellent record in Melbourne, backing him to triumph at 11/2 looks could be a very decent bet.
