Adam Scott favourite for WGC Cadillac after flowing opening round

Adam Scott has been installed as the 5/1 favourite for the WGC Cadillac Championship after a brilliant opening round of 66.

The Blue Monster Doral was playing every bit as difficult as the name would suggest, with swirling winds and the brutal par-4, 467 yard 18th leaving the world’s best golfers struggling to post decent scores.

New World No.1 Rory McIlroy came home with a disappointing one-over 73 after falling flat following his heroics at the Honda Classic last week.

He’s still in the hunt though and his incredibly consistent performances over the past few months – he has finished outside the top five just once in his previous 11 ranked events – means he shouldn’t be discounted.

He is now out at 16/1 to win the tournament which may be worth backing with an each-way punt.

Meanwhile, Justin Rose continued his solid form from the Honda into the opening round of the Cadillac and is just three shots off the lead after a back-nine 33 propelled him up the leaderboard.

He is a very tempting 20/1 to claim his first title of 2012.

Meanwhile, Tiger Woods couldn’t quite replicate the blistering form he showed in the final round of the Honda Classic last week, but the 14-times major champion ground out a very decent even-par round that included an eagle on the opening hole.

He has drifted to 12/1 following his first round, while rival Phil Mickelson has gone out to a pretty big 20/1 despite being one shot better off at one-under.

However, there can be no denying that Scott – who is joint leader with Jason Dufner (12/1) – is the clear favourite though as he showed last season with his impressive win at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational that he can lead from the front.
