Super Bowl XLVI smashes records in terms of betting turnover

SUPER BOWL XLVI turnover increased 80 per cent this year, according to Ladbrokes.

Billed as the ‘Greatest show on Earth’, underdogs New York Giants (13/10) stormed into an early lead and despite letting the 5/7 favourites New England Patriots back in to the game, the Giants were eventually victorious in the 46th Super Bowl.

The Giants are now chalked up at 14/1 for back-to back wins, however, the Patriots (8/1) and Green Bay Packers (7/1) lead the market in the quest to take home the Super Bowl XLVII trophy.

In the run up to Sunday’s kick-off the firm, Ladbrokes were top price on all money back special markets which saw nifty punters pocket £20,000 as they took advantage of the first scoring play by the Giants at 125/1.

The Patriots were heavily backed pre-AFC Championship which would have resulted in a £200,000 payout, however, the bookies also laid bets to Giants fans who backed them while they drifted out as far as 80/1.

Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: “We got out fingers burnt as punters took full advantage. We couldn’t stop laying bets thanks to our top price offers pre-match and in-play betting went through the roof.”

She added: “Betting on the Super Bowl goes from strength to strength and having laid some big bets we’re looking forward to next year already.”
