Stuart Pearce would definitely welcome approach for England job

Fabio Capello’s shock resignation yesterday has seen a flurry of bets placed on the Italian’s successor, with Harry Redknapp the 2/7 favourite ahead of Stuart Pearce at 4/1.

Redknapp would appear to be the outstanding candidate for the job, receiving support from the likes of England legends Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, while Wayne Rooney last night tweeted: “Got to be English to replace Capello. Harry Redknapp for me.”

While the influence of such figures should not be underestimated, other options cannot be dismissed completely, with some still believing that Redknapp could be unwilling to leave Tottenham at this stage.

Stuart Pearce comes second in the betting, and his undoubted passion for the country would almost certainly ensure that he would jump at the chance should he be given it.

Already pencilled in to coach Team Great Britain’s football side at the 2012 Olympics, Pearce would surely prioritise the top English job should the FA express an interest in promoting him from his role in charge of the Under 21s.

Away from the passion that seemingly defines Pearce, it is Redknapp’s man-management skills that look to be the key attribute making him an appealing proposition for players and respected pundits alike, with those who have performed under his guidance seldom having a bad word to say about him.

He could however emerge as a victim of his own success.

Having guided Tottenham to third place in the Premier League, with very real Champions League ambitions, and a hope of challenging for the title, some now believe that the manager will stay put and continue the terrific work he has done at White Hart Lane.

That said, the Tottenham boss has previously outlined a desire to manage his country at some point, and could still find the opportunity too difficult to resist.

Club commitments are non-existent for Pearce however, it could be wise to take a punt on the 4/1 for him to become next England manager.
