Plenty of stats to back-up a New York Giants Super Bowl punt
Published:The New York Giants once again face the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl this Sunday in a repeat of the dramatic February 2008 renewal.
The Giants came out on top in that clash, winning an incredibly tight and tense game 17-14 to claim their fourth Super Bowl title – and there is plenty of evidence to suggest the Giants could upset the odds for a second time.
They head into the Super Bowl with a regular season record worse than the Patriots but their 12-7 record is only half the story.
Despite having a rather lacklustre time of things in the regular season, the Giants were brilliant in the play-offs and swept aside Super Bowl holders, Green Bay Packers, 37-20.
They have tightened up their defence that was conceding 376.4 yards a game in the regular season and, in the play-offs, they allowed their opponents just 321 yards – a dramatic improvement that will stand them in good stead against the Patriots who will be looking at Tom Brady to get them plenty of yards through the air.
Brady has once again been brilliant for the Patriots but with the likes of defensive end Justin Tuck confident of getting at Brady and frustrating the superstar, then they have a very real chance of claiming another Super Bowl.
As well as their newly-solid defence, the Giants also have quarterback Eli Manning to call upon who will be determined to show he is more than a match for Brady and step out from the shadow of his Super Bowl MVP winning brother, Peyton.
The Giants are the 13/10 outsiders for the match-up but, with history on their side and a host of players hitting form at just the right time, there is every chance they could spring another surprise.
