Patriots and Giants poised for a high-scoring Super Bowl clash
Published:The Super Bowl meeting between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants in February 2008 may have been an incredibly tight affair but things promise to be vastly different this time out.
Both teams have made it to the Super Bowl in spite of some less than impressive defence and, with the quality of quarterback on show at the Lucas Oil Stadium, there should be a glut of scoring opportunities created.
The Patriots and the Giants combined have the worst pass defences ever to make it to the Super Bowl and have allowed 8,785 yards against them this season.
That’s a massive 1,581 yards more than the previous worst final match-up – the February 2000 game between St Louis Rams and the Tennessee Titans.
That poor pass defence record would be worrying regardless of the quarterbacks lining up but, when the quarterbacks on display are the brilliant Tom Brady of the Patriots and the Giants’ Eli Manning, both teams will have cause for concern.
Brady heads into the game having passed 5,235 yards this season – the most ever for a QB heading into the Super Bowl.
Manning is not far behind having passed the football for 4,933 successful yards for the Patriots this season.
With two teams surrendering plenty of yards through the air, this has all the makings of being an extremely high-scoring game.
The 2008 Super Bowl meeting between the pair saw the Patriots come out on top in a low-scoring 17-14 game, while their meeting earlier this season saw the Giants come through with a 24-20 victory at New England.
All the stats point to this being a high-scoring game though and backing over 53.5 points to be scored looks well worth consideration.
