FA Cup a manageable task for Liverpool as they target cup double
Published:Having overcome Cardiff at Wembley to claim a first piece of silverware in six years, Liverpool have the will to go on and compete for more trophies under Kenny Dalglish’s stewardship, and they can complete a domestic double by winning the FA Cup too at 11/4.
Liverpool have twice won the League Cup and FA Cup in the same season, on both occasions part of a treble, and with the FA Cup certain to be viewed as a priority competition by Dalglish, it is easy to get behind the idea of them collecting each of the titles as they did in 1984 and 2001.
It took a penalty shoot-out for the Reds to get past a spirited Cardiff outfit at Wembley, but a home tie with Stoke in the FA Cup quarter-final should be more straightforward for a side desperate to bring the glory days back to Anfield.
FA Cup winners seven times in the past, Liverpool are the fourth most successful team to ever appear in the competition, and their last trophy until this weekend’s Carling Cup triumph was said cup in 2006, where a Steven Gerrard-inspired outfit disposed of West Ham on penalties.
Indeed, Gerrard has insisted that yesterday’s cup win should be the first of many as he looks to lead Liverpool back to the forefront of English football, telling Sky Sports: “The important thing now is to enjoy this cup final and then we need to build on it. It would be stupid if we just accept this. We need more, we want more.”
This season’s FA Cup provides a superb opportunity to add to their haul in speedy fashion, and considering that current holders and Premier League leaders Manchester City are already out, along with 11-time FA Cup winners Manchester United, a Liverpool team with as much pedigree and as high squad quality as anyone in the last eight, are well-priced at 11/4 to complete a double this season.
