Amos out to make the same Man Utd impact as Arsenal stopper

Ben Amos did little wrong on his Manchester United Premier League debut and he is now hoping to make the same impression that Wojciech Szczesny made at Arsenal to take over as their regular stopper between the sticks.

Szczesny was arguably Arsene Wenger’s fourth choice goalkeeper to begin with, but was given a chance to prove his credentials after injuries and poor form saw the manager overlook Manuel Almunia, Luzasz Fabianski and Vito Mannone.

Amos starts in a similar position, but will find it tougher to become the permanent number one, given that Manchester United paid close to £16m to bring in David De Gea from Atletico Madrid.

However, he made the perfect start in his quest with a clean sheet in an error-free performance against Stoke and is expected to be called upon again against Chelsea.

De Gea and Anders Lindegaard both picked up injuries in training prior to the Stoke win and are still struggling to return to action.

Therefore, Amos is preparing for the biggest game of his life against Chelsea and Manchester United have not won a Premier League match at Stamford Bridge since 2002.

This may make Chelsea favourites in the eyes of many despite failing to beat Norwich and Swansea in their last two Premier League games, especially if the likes of Wayne Rooney and Nani fail to recover from niggles that also caused them to miss the Stoke success.

Chelsea’s odds do make them the slight favourites to triumph at 6/4, but they have already lost at home to Liverpool and Arsenal this season.

This will give Manchester United added confidence and they can be backed at 13/8 to take the three points, with the draw that will help neither club in their respective aims for the campaign priced at 2/1.
