Wigan vs Sunderland: expect a tight battle between in-form sides

Published:

Sunderland head into their game against Wigan high on confidence after their surprise victory over Premier League leaders Manchester City on New Year’s Day.

However, with Wigan earning an excellent draw at Stoke – despite being reduced to ten men – this looks set to be an extremely close battle…

Match odds

Wigan are the narrow favouirtes at 8/5 heading into this game and currently look in excellent shape after losing just two of their previous eight Premier League games.

They have already seen off Sunderland 2-1 at the Stadium of Light in that run and have not lost against the Black Cats at the DW Stadium in their previous five encounters there.

However, Sunderland can be backed at 17/10 to get the win and, with the North East side winning three of their previous five games, a punt on them could prove very worthwhile.

However, Roberto Martinez’s men have drawn three of their last four games and backing the draw at 9/4 looks the most tempting match bet.

Goal markets

Wigan have the worst attacking record in the Premier League and host a team who have the 6th best defence and were able to shut out the attacking might of Manchester City in their last game.

Goals will be hard to come by in this game and backing under 2.5 goals at 4/5 is well worth consideration.

However, there has only ever been one goalless draw in the 18 previous meetings between these teams and two of their last four encounters have finished 1-1.

The same scoreline can be backed at 11/2.
