Southampton v Leicester: Saints to overtake West Ham with win
Southampton take on Leicester at St Mary’s this evening knowing a victory would take them back to the top of the Championship table – and it would take a brave punter to back against them.
Nigel Adkins’ men have a superior goal difference to current table-toppers West Ham United and are three points behind, meaning a win would see them overtake the east Londoners.
Meanwhile, Leicester’s erratic season shows no sign of stabilising any time soon and they come into this game on the back of a league defeat to Barnsley and are currently 15th in the Championship.
However, with Saints’ top scorer Rickie Lambert out through suspension, the Foxes shouldn’t be completely discounted…
Southampton are unsurprisingly the favourites to win this clash at 5/6 and boast a fantastic home record.
They have lost just once at home all season – a 1-0 defeat against Bristol City back in December – and no team has scored more goals than the Saints on their home patch.
With Leicester winning just three of their 12 matches on the road this season it’s extremely hard to see beyond a win for the Saints.
However, if you fancy something of an upset, then the Foxes can be backed at 10/3 to come away with all three points.
They won their last game – a 4-0 drubbing of Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup – and even won their previous away league game against Carling Cup semi-finalists Crystal Palace.
Their meeting earlier in the season saw Leicester run out 3-2 winners and the same result this time out can be backed at 50/1.
However, with Southampton boasting the second best home defence in the Championship, backing them to keep a clean sheet at 11/8 looks well worth considering – especially as the Foxes haven’t scored on their last five visits to the south coast side.
If you’re confident of a win for the Saints though, then backing them to win to nil at 2/1 also looks pretty tempting.
