QPR boss Hughes targets Samba and Drogba in transfer window
Published:You can’t read an interview with Mark Hughes without the word ‘ambition’ being used at least a dozen times – and he’s certainly got plenty of it if the latest transfer rumours are to be believed.
Hughes took over as QPR boss earlier in the week and has immediately set about looking to add new players to his relegation-threatened side.
According to the Daily Mail, he is hoping to bag Blackburn Rovers defender Chris Samba and will table a bid of around £7million to get the centre-half.
Hughes was the man who signed Samba for Rovers when he snapped up the Congolese for £450,000 in 2007 and rumours suggest the pair could be reunited in west London.
QPR have the fifth worst defence in the Premier League this term so there is no denying a player of Samba’s calibre would help their survival bid, however, it’s at the other end of the pitch that they are having real problems.
The Hoops have the third worst attack in the top tier of English football and have only scored more than one goal in a game once in their last nine matches.
They have been relying on veteran striker Heidar Helgusonto bag them the goals and, according to several newspapers, it’s a problem that Hughes looks set to address with a bid for Didier Drogba.
The Chelsea striker is out of contract in the summer and Hughes will hope to convince the Blues to get rid of the player for some cash this January.
However, money isn’t exactly an issue for Chelsea and if Hughes was to sign Drogba – and it’s a big ‘if’ – then he will probably have to wait until the summer.
QPR are currently 2/1 to be relegated following Hughes’ arrival but expect those odds to lengthen if his ambitious transfer swoops come off.
