Murdoch expected to get more than one million followers on Twitter

The year 2011 was not the most prestigious in the career of Rupert Murdoch but at least the only abuse he had to worry about came from rogue flan flingers.

However, the Australian media mogul – who is founder, Chairman and CEO of News Corporation, the world’s second-largest media conglomerate – could now be getting more than his fair share having joined Twitter.

Despite only joining the social networking site on New Year’s Eve, Murdoch is already careering towards 100,000 followers and the controversy surrounding the phone hacking scandal that closed the News of the World is sure to see his number of followers rise – especially when the Leveson Inquiry resumes.

And he’s already made headlines during his brief stint on Twitter with a tweet about how “maybe Brits have too many holidays for broke country”, although it was swiftly deleted following the advice of his wife Wendy Deng who tweeted “RUPERT!!! delete tweet!”

However, with controversy never far away from the 80-year-old, he looks set to amass followers quickly and is 5/2 to have 1,000,001 to 1,500,000 followers by the end of 2012.

Meanwhile, he’s also odds on at 5/6 to grow tired of the site and permanently delete his Twitter account in 2012.

Whatever the outcome, 2012 has certainly got off to an interesting start…
