Lampard warns Chelsea against big changes as Cahill deal stalls
Published:Chelsea are rarely quiet when a transfer window is open and this January is no different.
Following a pretty dreadful first half to the season that’s seen the Blues fall 11 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City, they are now struggling for Champions League qualification and have drifted to 8/13 to finish in the top four.
Following such a disappointing start for Andre Villas-Boas, big changes to the Chelsea team are looking increasingly likely, with the likes of John Terry and Frank Lampard both no longer untouchable, guaranteed starters for the west London club.
However, unsurprisingly, it’s Lampard who has been the most vocal in his belief that the old guard still have plenty to offer a manager who is just a few months his senior.
Speaking to the London Evening Standard, Lampard said: “We need our big players with John Terry, who was magnificent against Wolves at the back.
“The spine of the team is what has made us what we are in the last seven years. I think it’s important.”
Terry may well have been magnificent against Wolves, but Villas-Boas is still hunting Bolton defender Gary Cahill.
The Deal looked as good as done a few days ago but there continues to be complications over his wage demands.
The player is allegedly demanding £120,000-a-week from Chelsea, although the Blues feel the £70,000-a-week they are currently offering is more than generous – even though they will pick up the player for a cut price £7million as his contract with Bolton runs out in the summer.
It sounds like a rather fractious time at Stamford Bridge and it’s hard to see them upsetting the 50/1 odds on them winning the Premier League while Villas-Boas is currently 11/8 to be the next Premier League boss out of a job.
