Gibson would welcome Everton move to end Man Utd frustration
Published:Darron Gibson looks set to depart Manchester United this January, with Everton heading the list of reported potential suitors.
The £2.5m fee being touted should not provide too much of a stumbling block for hard-up Everton, who are keen to strengthen in key areas to combat recent injury woes throughout the squad.
The Toffees’ troubles on the treatment table were compounded by Sylvain Distin’s withdrawal during Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat away to Tottenham, to leave David Moyes, already without other first-choice centre-back Phil Jagielka, desperately short of options in defence.
He is likely to opt to utilise Marouane Fellaini as an emergency centre-half, and so will require cover for the combative midfielder.
Ireland international Gibson fits the bill perfectly, and having fallen behind Michael Carrick, Anderson, Tom Cleverley, Ryan Giggs and the recently-returned Paul Scholes in the Old Trafford pecking order, the move would appear to make sense for all parties.
Gibson recently felt the wrath of Sir Alex Ferguson following a night out with team-mates Jonny Evans and Wayne Rooney, and while the latter is seen as utterly indispensable, the same cannot be said for the 24-year-old midfielder, whose tenure of mixed fortunes in Manchester now looks certain to come to an end.
Also eager to cement a place in Ireland’s Euro 2012 squad, Gibson will need to play regularly to impress national boss Giovanni Trapattoni, and would likely be afforded the chance to do so at Goodison Park.
It could be too far-fetched to suggest that the fierce-shooting maestro will be available for selection by Everton for their trip to Villa Park this weekend, where they are priced a lengthy 15/8 to win, but Moyes will undoubtedly be keen to secure his signature and bolster his injury-hit squad as quickly as possible.
