Bayern Munich looking to offer escape route to Man Utd star
Published:Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich have declared an interest in securing the services of Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov.
The 2010 Champions League finalists are said to be preparing for the imminent departure of Ivica Olic, who appears set to see out his contract and leave on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Berbatov would likely not be allowed to leave Old Trafford in a similar fashion, with Sir Alex Ferguson recently signalling his intention to activate a clause which would see the Bulgarian’s contract extended for another year.
However, it is thought that this move could be motivated by a will to protect United’s investment, rather than an assurance that the former Bayer Leverkusen striker will get more game time for the Premier League champions.
Indeed, Ferguson has used him as sparingly as ever this term, though the trequarista has still managed to hit six league goals in just four starts and five substitute appearances, displaying the kind of form that still makes him sought-after by some of the world’s biggest clubs.
In Mario Gomez, the Bavarian outfit already have one of the hottest striking properties in world football, with the attacker averaging over a goal a game in this year’s Champions League.
It would seem that boss Jupp Heynckes has now identified Berbatov as the perfect foil for the German striker, and with the potency he has displayed in both goal scoring, and claiming assists for team-mates, it is hard to imagine him not having a great impact in this role.
Particularly encouraging for Bayern supporters, whose side are priced at 5/1 to achieve Champions League glory this year, is the tremendous displays Berbatov has shown when playing alongside clinical finishers such as Javier Hernandez and Jermain Defoe in the past.
With Gomez seemingly on a different level in terms of sheer finishing quality, the prospect of him combining with Berbatov is a very attractive proposition indeed.
