Allardyce turns to Sordell to lend weight to West Ham title bid
Published:Fancied for promotion before a ball was kicked this season, West Ham have managed to achieve a level of consistency that has seen them rise to a position as joint-league leaders.
Boss Sam Allardyce is now intent on adding more firepower to his team to ensure they make it past the finish line and achieve their goal of promotion.
A move for Huddersfield striker Jordan Rhodes has been mooted repeatedly, but his five-goal haul in last Friday’s televised league game appears to have pushed his price tag beyond the Londoners’ reach, with scouts from eight Premier League clubs also reportedly tracking his progress.
Instead, ‘Big Sam’ now looks set to turn his attentions to Watford’s highly-rated England under-21 international forward Marvin Sordell.
The pacy striker has impressed in a struggling Hornets side, and would appear to be the perfect contrast to play alongside a bigger man in the form of Carlton Cole or Frederic Piquionne.
If reports are to be believed, the Hammers are lining up a £2m bid for the 20-year-old, who has hit ten goals already this term, though Watford boss Sean Dyche is reluctant to let him go.
Another option could be QPR technical forward Jamie Mackie, of whom Allardyce is also a fan.
Mark Hughes hasn’t had much time to run the rule over his newly-inherited Rs squad as of yet, but could be tempted to allow the sale of Mackie in order to pave the way for some of his own signings to come in, after admitting his squad is far too big as it stands.
One player that looks very likely to complete a move to Upton Park though, is Ryoichi Maeda.
The Japan international is flying to London in order to train with the Hammers, and Allardyce will tie up a deal for the striker should he sufficiently impress.
