Punters expecting mistletoe and sunshine on Christmas Day

As well as potentially piling on the pounds this Christmas, punters are also getting stuck into this Christmas Day being the warmest on record in England.

The hottest currently known was the 16.5c experienced in 1920 and the fact that the relatively warm weather experienced throughout much of the winter has continued largely into December, has seen the price shorten substantially.

A week ago it was 20/1 that this would be the warmest Christmas Day ever, but a string of bets has seen this price drop to just 2/1.

Temperatures across England have generally begun to slightly improve in the past few days after a chilly start, with highs of around 12c in the Truro region.

If the cold can stay away for the forthcoming few days, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that highs of 17c will be witnessed in a part of England on December 25.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “This mild weather gamble has got us sweating just as much as the rising temperatures. Punters are now banking on the mercury continuing to rise for a bumper Christmas pay-day.”
