Man Utd transfer rumours continue to fly as new midfielder is sought

Manchester United look set for one of their busiest transfer windows in recent memory – at least if the papers are to be believed.

With Darren Fletcher out injured for an indeterminate period of time and constant calls from supporters and pundits for Sir Alex Ferguson to add a midfielder to his ranks, it’s no surprise that many of the rumours centre on players who operate in the middle of the park.

The Daily Mail begin proceedings by claiming United are chasing Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen.

The 19 year-old is highly rated by the Dutch side and United coach Rene Meulensteen has admitted the English champions are monitoring the situation.

He said: “This is a player that is on our radar

“It is true that a player like Eriksen would fit our transfer policy.

“He is being strongly linked with us, but to suggest that we are about to make a move is not true.”

Meanwhile, the Daily Star are going big with a rumour that the Manchester side are chasing Basel playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri.

According to the paper, the 20 year-old impressed Ferguson during their recent meetings with Basel and are prepared to table a £10million bid for the Kosovo-born player this January.

Finally, the Daily Mirror believe Ferguson will wait a little longer to bag a midfielder and reckon he’ll wait until the summer to splash the cash on Newcastle United’s Cheick Tiote.

The defensive midfielder has been excellent for the Magpies this season and would help fill the hole left by the long-term lay-off of Fletcher.

United are second favourites for the Premier League title at 15/8 but are a long way behind odd-on favourites Manchester City who are currently 4/6 to claim their first Premier League title.
