Liverpool vs Newcastle: Carroll to quiet doubters in home win

Published:

Liverpool may have suffered some stuttering home results this season but the fact that Newcastle have failed to score on their last five Premier League visits to Anfield means that Kenny Dalglish’s men can triumph.

The Reds are unbeaten in the league at home this season, but have collected disappointing draws drawn with the likes of Norwich, Swansea, Sunderland and most recently bottom club Blackburn.

Based on these results, 1/2 may seem like a short price that they defeat Newcastle, but Liverpool can be expected to get it right.

Steven Gerrard could give Liverpool a boost having played 20 minutes against Blackburn, although it is likely that he will once again be handed a substitute’s role despite scoring six goals in his last eight appearances with Newcastle.

There is no doubt that all eyes will be on Andy Carroll against his former club, especially given the criticism he has come under after missing a strong of decent chances against Blackburn and the fact that Luis Suarez is absent after admitting to an FA improper conduct charge.

However, it would be nothing but ironic should he prove his doubters wrong against Newcastle.

Carroll is 9/2 to score the opening goal and 6/5 to find the target at any point in the 90 minutes.

Another popular bet may be Liverpool to triumph 3-0 at 9/1 in the Premier League odds, as this has been the outcome in the last three meetings between the pair at Anfield.

Newcastle are 6/1 to beat Liverpool and they may be buoyed by the fact that they can overtake their opponents in the Premier League standings with a success.

If they are to win, Newcastle will need Demba Ba to recover from a knock to the knee he suffered in the 2-0 victory at Bolton and improve upon a record that has seen them lose on 14 of their last 16 visits to Anfield.
